More importantly, she also showed what these ‘extraordinary plant-occurrences’ revealed about ‘the mutual interdependence not only of individuals but of industries and communities’. By documenting how the ecology of a small patch of the Scottish Borders had been transformed by the textile industry Hayward drew attention to the environmental change caused by the global trade in wool.
Woollen and worsted production boomed in the 19th century, particularly in Scotland, West Yorkshire, and Wales. To feed this industry, Britain imported wool from around the world, principally from places that formed part of its vast imperial network, including New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. Britain became the world’s largest importer of raw wool, and by the early 1920s around one third of the world’s sheep were located within the empire’s confines.
The majority of these sheep were merino. While they proved unsuited to the British climate, merino thrived in Australia, which became the wool powerhouse of the British Empire. The first merino sheep arrived in Botany Bay in 1797, only nine years after the first European settlement had been established there. Botany would soon become a byword for high-quality merino, and by the end of the 19th century over 100 million sheep roamed vast pastoral estates across Australia. While the cotton industry was underpinned by the plantation system, wool depended on the pastoral economy, which came to be associated with a different form of exploitation. Comparatively low in labour intensity, pastoralism required vast amounts of land for the grazing of sheep and cattle. In Australia the expansion of pastoralism by British settlers, together with sustained violence and harassment and the importation of diseases, drove Aboriginal people off their land.
Pastoralism also produced a wholesale transformation of the Australian landscape. Alongside the expansion of grasslands came the propagation of so-called ‘weeds’: imported plants unwanted by farmers and herders, but which nevertheless thrived in the newly expanded pastures. Thistles became a serious problem in Australia from the mid-19th century: these ‘vegetable plagues’, as one contemporary denounced them, became the subject of a national campaign of extermination in 1862. Knot grass, red sorrel (also called sheep’s sorrel), and dandelion also spread rapidly, suited as they were to the extensive pastures taking hold of the Australian landscape, and crowded out native species, reducing the quality of grassland so that it became unusable to farmers. The extension of grazing and the elimination of indigenous species such as kangaroo grass led to rapid soil erosion and the consequent degradation of pastures. As the quality of soils and pastures declined, the demand for land accelerated.
Many plant species travelled ‘accidentally’: as stowaways in cargo, luggage, and goods. But they also arrived in seed shipments imported specifically to alter the landscape to better suit its new ovine inhabitants. The ‘improvement’ of grasslands promised a scientific solution for boosting agricultural productivity. In New Zealand grass replaced acre upon acre of indigenous bush forest, wetland, and tussock grassland from the mid-19th century. Sheep, many of them merino crossbreeds, roamed these new grasslands, which were often planted with imported ‘English’ seed mixtures. As in Australia, newcomers such as dock, watercress, and white clover flourished in the new pastoral environments at the expense of indigenous flora. Similar processes altered the ecology of South Africa, the Falklands/Malvinas, and Argentina.
The environmental effects of the wool trade did not stop at the sheep farm. Imported wool was usually washed and ‘scoured’, a process which removed dirt and impurities. This dislodged the seeds which resulted in the plants that Hayward recorded in Tweedside, but it also released large quantities of lanolin, the oily substance found in sheep’s coats. Soaps, acids, and other substances such as ammonia and bleach were used in these processes. All of this was flushed directly into streams and rivers. Wool was often dyed, a process which used a medley of additional chemical pollutants. The pollution caused by the dyeing industry was intensified with the arrival of coal-based aniline dyes in the mid-19th century, which produced a greater variety of bright colours, but were much more toxic than organic dyes.
Wool manufacturing posed such a threat to the health of British rivers that an 1871 report by the Rivers Pollution Commission focused its attention on woollen mills and associated businesses across England and Scotland, highlighting the foul state of rivers and streams. By far the worst offender was Bradford Beck, which the commissioners described as a ‘black, filthy, and offensive stream’. The author of one memorandum sent a stark message about the state of pollution by dipping his pen not in ink, but in water drawn from the River Calder.
Most of the species that Ida Hayward discovered during her walks did not become naturalised in the UK. As wool scouring and washing began to employ more intensive methods and chemicals, the number of ‘wool aliens’ capable of germinating after the production process fell. A few species, however, had already established themselves. One of the plants that Hayward identified, the pirri-pirri burr, originated in New Zealand and Australia and was almost certainly introduced by the wool trade. Today, it continues to thrive across much of the UK and Ireland. The British wool industry has long since lost the dominance it once enjoyed, but evidence of its environmental effects lives on in pastures, fields, and rivers in Britain and around the world.

It was a provocative act, in breach of church rules on fasting. Twelve people were present. Some later became Anabaptists; one, a bootmaker named Hottinger, would be beheaded in Baden two years later for challenging the Mass.
Also present was Ulrich Zwingli, a canon at the city’s Grossmünster. Zwingli had been radicalised by Erasmus, but he went further than his master. For Erasmus, people should obey fasting rules until they were abolished by the church; for Zwingli, the church had no right to set such rules in the first place. It was unbiblical.
Rebellion was contagious: on Palm Sunday, Zwingli heard, some priests ate a suckling pig in Basel. Towards the end of the month he delivered a sermon titled ‘Regarding the Choice and Freedom of Foods’. Some Lenten regulations, he noted, were relatively recent. If it was such a sin to have eggs on fast days, why had it taken the church 14 centuries to act? Froschauer put the sermon into print.
After Easter, Zwingli attacked clerical celibacy. This, at least, was personal: he was already secretly married.
Large Fresco Depicting The Procession Of The Wine God Dionysus Found In Pompeii
Conny Waters – AncientPages.com – Over a century after the Villa of the Mysteries was discovered, a significant fresco has been uncovered, offering new insights into the mysteries of Dionysus in classical antiquity.
This discovery took place in a large banquet hall recently excavated in Pompeii’s central area, specifically in insula 10 of Regio IX. The nearly life-size frieze, known as “megalography” (from Greek meaning “large painting”), adorns three walls of the room while the fourth side opens to a garden.

The artwork illustrates Dionysus’s procession—the god associated with wine—featuring bacchantes depicted as dancers and hunters carrying a slaughtered goat or wielding swords and animal entrails. Young satyrs with pointed ears are shown playing double flutes, while another performs an acrobatic wine sacrifice by pouring wine from a drinking horn over his shoulder into a patera (a shallow cup).
Central to this composition is a woman standing beside an elderly Silenus holding a torch, signifying her role as an initiand—a mortal woman about to be initiated into the mysteries of Dionysus, who symbolizes death and rebirth and offers this promise to his followers.

In a press release, Italy’s Minister of Culture said that the frieze discovered in Pompeii offers fascinating insights into ancient art and religious practices. All figures in the frieze are depicted on pedestals, resembling statues, yet their dynamic movements, lifelike complexion, and detailed clothing give them a vivid presence. Archaeologists have named the site “House of the Thiasos,” referencing Dionysus’ procession. In antiquity, cults like that of Dionysus required initiation rituals for entry; these were known as “mysteries” due to their secretive nature accessible only to initiates. These cults often promised a blessed existence both in this life and beyond.
This particular frieze is an example of the Second Style of Pompeian painting from the 1st century BC, dated explicitly between 40-30 B.C. By the time Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, burying Pompeii under ash and lapilli, this Dionysian artwork was already around a century old. Another notable example with similar ritual depictions is found in the Villa of the Mysteries outside Pompeii’s gates.

The newly discovered frieze adds an intriguing dimension to our understanding of Dionysian initiatory rituals by introducing themes related to hunting. This theme is illustrated not only by bacchante huntresses but also through a smaller accompanying frieze depicting live and dead animals such as fawns, wild boars freshly disemboweled, roosters, and various birds, alongside scenes involving fishing and seafood collection.
The Dionysian Thiasos environment at the Pompeii excavation site is now accessible to the public during specific visiting hours. Starting from the initial excavation stages, visitors can view this remarkable site from Monday to Friday at 11 am. Two groups of up to 15 people each are allowed entry by reservation, which can be made by calling 327 2716666. During these visits, construction staff will guide attendees through the main discoveries and explain both the environments and excavation techniques used. Visitors must purchase a standard entrance ticket for access to the archaeological park.

The ongoing investigations in Regio IX of Pompeii began in February 2023 and span approximately 3,200 square meters—nearly an entire block of this ancient city buried by Vesuvius in AD 79. The project is nearing completion with final safety measures underway, alongside a valorization project that will enable permanent public access. The “Excavation, Safety, and Restoration of Insula 10 Regio IX” initiative aims to reconnect with Via di Nola’s urban landscape.
Recent excavations have uncovered two atrium houses initially explored in the 19th century; these were constructed during the Samnite period and later converted into production workshops in the first century AD—a fullonica (laundry) and a bakery featuring an oven, millstone areas, and rooms for food processing intended for city distribution. To the south lies a large domus with living rooms showcasing significant finds: a spacious room adorned with Dionysian scenes, a black hall depicting Trojan saga narratives, a shrine on a blue background illustrating agricultural themes, as well as an extensive thermal area.

Scattered over 700,000 square kilometers (270, 271 sq mi) in the southern Pacific Ocean are the Tonga islands. On one of the 176 islands that make up Tonga, there stands one of the strangest megalithic monuments in the Pacific, a trilithon called Ha’amonga ‘a Maui (A carrying stick/burden of Maui).
‘The Crowd in the Early Middle Ages’ by Shane Bobrycki review
Early medieval history is a crowded field. Despite the small source base, which only grows meaningfully in terms of archaeological data, the period has enjoyed the sustained interest of a large (and, until recently, growing) number of scholars. A premium is therefore placed on the questions historians ask and the frameworks they apply. Discoveries tend to come by looking at old problems in new ways, rather than uncovering new evidence. It is this which accounts for the success of this pithy new book by Shane Bobrycki. Bobrycki takes as his subject the humble crowd, showing that it has its own distinctive history, one which can be deeply revealing. For Bobrycki, the crowd is a prism through which to see the transformations Western Europe underwent between the eclipse of Roman authority in the fifth and sixth centuries and the urban and economic boom of the 11th and 12th centuries (what R.I. Moore once called ‘the First European Revolution’).
At the hands of a lesser historian, this material would have swiftly dissolved into a series of disparate observations. For the task Bobrycki has set himself is vast. He examines the figure of the crowd in its many forms across five centuries (c.500-c.1000) and all Western Europe (albeit with an avowed focus on Francia and Lombard northern Italy). Despite the notorious paucity of sources from these years, this is a massive undertaking. To read all the relevant written sources alone would be a lifetime’s work; to master the secondary literature fully would require truly Mosaic longevity. Bobrycki’s success may be attributed not only to his unusually wide reading (there was much in the notes which was new to me), but also his uncanny knack for distinguishing the wood from the proverbial trees.
For Bobrycki, the demographic thinning of the fourth and fifth centuries, occasioned by ecological and epidemiological disaster, set the scene for what he terms the new ‘crowd regime’ of the early Middle Ages. The crowds of Roman antiquity shared much with their later medieval and early modern counterparts. They were treated with studied ambivalence by the (largely elite) commentators of the era, who knew their importance in generating political consensus and legitimating regimes, but were equally aware that they could be double-edged swords. In the large and populous cities of the late Roman empire, crowds broke political regimes just as quickly as they made them, turning on emperors and governors who were perceived to have failed in their calling. By contrast, in the largely rural and agrarian society of the early Middle Ages, large gatherings were rare and typically required a degree of elite initiative (the largest were the armies called up by rulers – hardly a natural revolutionary force). This was a world in which crowd control was much easier for elites. As a consequence, we see a number of interesting semantic shifts, with terms such as turba, a largely pejorative term for crowd in Classical Latin (think perturbed), taking on neutral or even positive connotations.
Large bodies of people were never entirely predictable and there remained a degree of instability to gatherings, particularly in those regions in which urban culture survived longest (such as Italy and southern France). Still, non-elite resistance tended to take forms which Bobrycki terms ‘slantwise’, borrowing a concept from the anthropologists Howard Campbell and Josiah Heyman. This refers to resistance which challenges the socio-political order indirectly, often adopting the outward trappings of legitimate action. In Bobrycki’s case, this means gathering at the wrong time or in manners which undermined the original purposes of an event; it could also involve redirecting licit action towards illicit (or at least undesired) outcomes. Such activity is particularly clear within the religious sphere, where much of what is spurned as ‘superstition’ by ecclesiastical authorities can be helpfully understood as slantwise resistance: conscious heterodoxy which fell just short of outright heresy. So, while elites found early medieval crowds more amenable than their antique forebears, they never achieved full dominance over them.
Bobrycki’s arguments are intelligently made and well supported throughout, making complex issues seem deceptively simple. At times, though, he risks assuming too much of his readers. While fellow specialists will catch most of his allusions (‘Bakhtinian carnival’, for example), many readers will not. The precise geographical compass of his survey could also have been clearer. Bobrycki focuses on Francia and Lombard central and northern Italy, but Spain and England both make periodic (and helpful) appearances. Less clear is the status of places such as Ireland, Wales, Scandinavia, and the Slavic lands. Bobrycki’s linguistic survey of terms for crowd includes the relevant vernaculars and he does occasionally cite evidence from Moravia, Bohemia, and Poland; otherwise, these regions are conspicuous by their absence. The biggest question left unanswered, however, is how Bobrycki’s model of the early medieval crowd regime might interact with other ones of power and domination in these years. Bobrycki’s analysis suggests that it was fundamentally demographic and economic factors which led to the overhaul of the early medieval crowd regime and the return to something more akin to late antique patterns of crowd behaviour in the central Middle Ages. He is doubtless right in part here. Yet he misses a trick in not engaging more directly with the work of Thomas Bisson and Alessio Fiore (among others), which identifies precisely these years as a period of dramatically increasing elite chauvinism. The benefits of economic and demographic growth only accrued to a small few, a fact which helps explain the more uppity crowds of the 11th and 12th centuries.
These quibbles do little to take away from the achievement represented by this book. It is a superb study, with wide-ranging implications not only for medieval historians, but also their antique and early modern colleagues. Historians should be thronging for it.
